Next General Election to be held Saturday, May 9, 2015
On Saturday, May 9, 2015 the citizens of Nacogdoches will elect three (3) members to the Nacogdoches City Council. Those positions are Northeast Ward Councilmember, Northwest Ward Councilmember and AT Large (Mayor). Candidates must live within the single member district they wish to represent.
To run for City Council you must: 1) be at least 18 years old; 2) be a resident of the city for six (6) months preceding the date of the election for the single ward positions; 3) have the qualifications of a registered voter of the city; 4) not hold any other public office for which you receive compensation; 5) not be indebted to the city; 6) not have been determined mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court; 7) not have been finally convicted of a felony from which you have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
The City Secretary will accept applications for a place on the ballot January 28 – February 27, 2015. Application packets will be available in the City Secretary’s office during normal business hours beginning January 26. The application packet is also available on the city’s website at Each candidate must submit the Application for a Place on the Ballot, Charter Compliance Statement and Appointment of Campaign Treasurer.
You must file the Appointment of Campaign Treasurer prior to accepting or receiving any campaign funds. The Texas Election Code defines candidate as “a person who knowingly and willingly takes affirmative action for the purpose of gaining nomination or election to public office or for the purpose of satisfying financial obligations incurred by the person in connection with the campaign for nomination or election.” A person becomes a candidate when a public announcement or statement is made of intent to run for office, soliciting support by letter or other mode of communication, accepting campaign contributions or making campaign expenditures, or an application is filed for a place on the ballot.
Candidate information packets containing general information about the city, necessary forms for filing and general election related information can be obtained from the City Secretary starting January 26, 2015 in addition to election information during the campaign period. The Texas Ethics Commission enforces the Campaign Finance requirements for candidates and officeholders. In most cases, there are two (2) campaign reports due prior to the election, and semi-annual reports due after the election. To be eligible to vote in the May 9, 2015 election you must have a current voter registration application on file at the Nacogdoches County Elections office no later than April 9, 2015. Click on the following link to download a Voter Registration Application.

Early Voting by Personal Appearance
If you are eligible to vote on Election Day, you are eligible to vote during the early voting period. The lines are shorter and the days and hours are more convenient. Early voting is open to all registered voters, no excuse necessary.
Early voting for City of Nacogdoches elections are held at the C.L. Simon Recreation Center, 1112 North Street (across from Tipton Ford). Early voting by personal appearance runs April 27-May 1, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and May 4 and 5, 2015 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Early Voting by Mail
All currently registered voters are eligible to request and receive a ballot by mail if any of the following conditions prevent them from voting in person during the early voting period or on Election Day:
1. Expected absence from the County during both the early voting period and on Election Day. (The ballot must be mailed to an address outside the county). 2. Disability 3. 65 years of age or older 4. Confinement in jail and not finally convicted of a felony
The request must state the address at which you are registered to vote, one of the above conditions for requesting a ballot, the address to which you want the ballot mailed and your signature. If the ballot is not to be mailed outside the County and not to the address at which you are registered, you must give explanation as to the address, such as a nursing home, hospital, etc.
Applications for ballot by mail may not be submitted more than 60 days before Election Day and must be received by the City Secretary no later than the close of business on April 30, 2015. Requests for a ballot by mail must be received BY MAIL after early voting has started.

Special conditions are available for persons who become hospitalized or suffer a death in the family after the close of regular application deadlines. Specific guidelines must be met to be eligible. For information, please contact the City Secretary’s office at 936-559-2504.
All general city elections are held the second Saturday of May and are held at the TJR Elementary School, 411 N. Mound Street. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Voters must present some form of photo identification in order to vote. To provide more efficient processing, please bring one of the following acceptable forms of photo ID:
? Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) ? Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS ? Texas personal identification card issued by DPS ? Texas concealed handgun license issued by DPS ? United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph ? United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph ? United States passport
With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the identification must be current or have expired no more than 60 days before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.
After the polls are closed and the ballots have been counted UNOFFICIAL election results will be available on the city’s website or by calling 936-559-2504. The election results will not become official until the election is canvassed by the City Council at a meeting scheduled for May 19, 2015.
