Fire Chief-Interim

Chief Mike Brown has been the Interim Fire Chief for Nacogdoches since March of 2023.  Prior to his current assignment, Chief Brown has served the City of Nacogdoches in various roles including Code Enforcement Officer, Fire Inspector, Fire/Arson Investigator, Firefighter, Driver-Engineer, Fire Captain and Fire Marshal.

In addition to being the Interim Fire Chief for the City of Nacogdoches, Brown leads in fire and

emergency response, fire prevention, fire emergency response, fire investigation, emergency

management, and life safety and code compliance.  Brown earned an Associate Degree in Fire

Administration from Weatherboard College, and is a Texas Department of State Health

Services Emergency Medical Technician, Master Firefighter, Master Peace Officer, Master

Fire Inspector, and Master Arson Investigator.


Chief Brown is a lifelong resident of the Nacogdoches area, and he and his wife, Larissa

Philpot-Brown, are proud to call Nacogdoches their home.

Business Manager

Terri Martin is the office manager of the Nacogdoches Fire Department.  She is responsible for all office administration functions and is the custodian of records for the department.  Terri is likely the person you talk to if you request a fire truck to visit a school, schedule a birthday party, participate in CFA or call the department with a question.  She takes pride in providing excellent customer service to the city and her department.

Interim Assistant Chief/ Emergency Management Coordinator

Michael Self is a 20-year veteran of the Nacogdoches Fire and Rescue. He began serving as the Division Chief of Training and Safety in December of 2019. Chief Self also began his tenure as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City in 2019. Chief Self holds 10 certifications with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection including, Master Structural Firefighter, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, Fire Officer IV, and Incident Commander. He is also certified as a Licenced Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services. Chief Self is a proud graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science degree.



The Division Chief of Training and Safety also serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Nacogdoches. This position coordinates with all City departments to develop and maintain all emergency plans for the City. The Emergency Management Coordinator works to assist in training and managing the city's emergency management team. As Division Chief of Training and Safety, this position oversees all hiring and promotional processes for the fire department. Currently under the city's structure this position manages the building maintenance department for city facilities. The fire department's training and emergency medical responses are coordinated by this position.

Fire Marshal Office 

The primary purpose of the Nacogdoches Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) is to promote public safety and reduce hazards to life and property.

Division Chief Mike Brown serves the Nacogdoches Fire Department as Fire Marshal.  The Primary duties of the FMO are fire/arson investigations and ensuring the safety of life and property through oversight and enforcement of model Fire and Building codes.   Chief Brown and shift investigators work together to determine the cause and origin of each explosion, building fire and/or vehicle fire within the City whose cause is not immediately known.  They may also assist the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies with cause and origin investigations when requested.   The Fire Marshal Investigators are dual-certified as licensed firefighters and peace officers.  Fire Marshal Chief Brown supervises the City of Nacogdoches Inspection Services Division, whose responsibilities include Building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical system inspections.

Administrative Captain

Administrative Captain Seth Johnson is responsible for performing Technical and High Hazard

Occupancy inspections and to respond to emergencies as needed. Other duties are to work on

special committees, including Pre-Development and Special Events, with other city

departments and outside customers. Seth has been with Nacogdoches Fire and Rescue since

2004 and is certified as an Advanced Firefighter, Inspector, and Paramedic and Divemaster and

is the Dive Team Leader.
